          Description

In the United States, it is estimated that 1 in 6 children have one or more developmental or behavioral disabilities. Oftentimes, early signs of problems are missed or unaddressed until a later age, when their impact has extended to several areas of a child’s life. Delays that are addressed early however, give children a chance to receive support when it’s more effective. Consistent use of specifically designed, valid and reliable developmental screening tools are an effective and cost-effective way to ensure that potential delays are identified in a timely manner.

Montessori programs are uniquely positioned to encourage the healthy development of children, detect issues when they arise, and work with the family to find solutions when support is needed.

This workshop was developed in 2018 as part of a project led by the Oregon Montessori Association to help support guides and schools wishing to improve their capacity to detect potential developmental delays in children, while working with families to address them and respecting the principles and practices of the Montessori pedagogy. It’s the perfect starting point for those beginning or strengthening their journey towards inclusion.

The content is divided into three sections:
          1. The context of screening, assessment and evaluation of a child’s development in early childhood
          2. Developmental screening tools: what they are, what they are not, and best practices when implementing them in a Montessori setting
          3. Practical implementation of a screening and monitoring program in Montessori schools and classrooms
